PTI core committee decides early LG polls

ISLAMABAD: The PTI core committee Thursday agreed to hold early local government elections and resolve the issue of appointment of Election Commission members and chief election commissioner amicably.Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said in a media briefing after the core committee meeting that the forum was appraised of the measures so far taken with regard to provision of relief to masses in the prices of daily use items. The performance of the provincial governments was also reviewed during the meeting. The forum expressed satisfaction over the measures to control price hike.Prime Minister Imran Khan, who chaired the meeting, informed the committee about the government s measures aimed at economic stability and the improvement in economic indicators. The meeting also deliberated upon the new local government system.Firdous Ashiq Awan said that the forum heaped praise on the prime minister for prudent economic policies and the steps being taken to provide relief to the consumers. The core committee laid emphasis on making the committee more pro-active with regard to the selection of new chief election commissioner and two members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). It was desired that the task of selection should be completed as early as possible.Dr Firdausi said there are some strange patients who get well at home instead of a hospital. She said that the ill could be fine at hospital but not at soft and cosy bed at home. But what kind of ill people are these, who get well at home instead of a hospital, she remarked.However, she said that they were praying for recovery of the ailing persons, who had obtained bail.The core committee expressed grave concern and outrage at the gory incident at Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) and said the clash of those wearing white coat and black coat was in no way in the interest of the nation. The core committee wanted the lawyers bodies to take action against the black sheep in their ranks. Those responsible for the PIC incident will be taken to task as per the law.Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar will contact all the stakeholders to thrash out a line of action so that no such unfortunate incident takes place in future. Likewise, the legal teams of PTI will interact with various lawyers associations and councils and an effective strategy will be adopted to avoid repeat of PIC-like tragedies.Dr Firdous said a mechanism was being worked out to gauge the provision of facilities to masses. She said a digital wing was being established at the Ministry of Information regarding social media.Earlier, she announced that the government had increased the pension of the Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) from Rs6,500 to Rs8,500.In messages of her Twitter account, she maintained that the increase is manifestation of Prime Minister Imran Khan s concern for the poor and downtrodden segments. She emphasised that this was a practical step towards the establishment of a welfare state on the model of the State of Madina. She added that the dream for an Islamic welfare state would be realised when the state take care of its weak segments like a mother. She also wrote that the prime minister was working towards the completion of this very mission.Dr Firdous claimed that the reason behind Pakistanis buying costlier gas was the wrongdoing of a puppet prime minister of PML-N, who had been busy in repeating the charges against the incumbent government of political vendetta and declaring themselves as innocent. She went on to allege that those, who were claiming to be clean had their past tainted with corruption and each penny looted from the national wealth would be recovered and the looters would be held accountable.The special assistant said that mind-rattling financial irregularities were surfacing on the PML-N government deal for import of LNG from Qatar and in the audit report on LNG import in 2015-16, negated claims of Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. She asserted that Rs108 billion in terms of irregularities and Rs4.5 billion additional charged from consumers would be recovered.
