Fall in oil price pushes Abu Dhabi to sell bonds valued at $10bn

1396/7/20 | 01:16
The government of Abu Dhabi announced on Tuesday that it has sold bonds worth $10 billion in what was the second such move in the UAE since oil prices started to fall in 2014.   According to a statement by the Department of Finance of the oil-rich emirate, the bonds were offered in three groups for a period of 10 to 30 years. The interest rates attached to the bonds range from 2.5 per cent to 4 per cent. The sale attracted investors regionally and globally, with more than 500 applications received, valued in excess of $30 billion.   Abu ...

Saudi Aramco bids to recover losses through Indian subsidiary

1396/7/15 | 01:16
In a bid to steer the country towards a new economic direction, Saudi oil giant Aramco will open an Indian subsidiary next week to regain some of the market share it has lost over the past few years to competitors around the world.   Rulers in Riyadh have been forced to overhaul major parts of their economy following the collapse in the price of oil and, according to three unnamed sources reported by Reuters, the Kingdom is looking to tap rising demand in the East and invest in the world’s third-biggest consumer economy.   The ...

Saudi Arabia slips back into recession

1396/7/10 | 01:16
The latest official figures show that Saudi Arabia has returned to recession in what is expected to have been a result of falling oil incomes as well as the government’s austerity measures to curb the kingdom’s budget deficit. Figures showed that Saudi Arabia’s gross domestic product (GDP), adjusted for inflation, shrank 2.3 percent from the previous quarter in the April-June period, after dropping 3.8 percent in the first quarter. The lower GDP is believed to have been a result of the kingdom’s lower production of crude oil ...

Low oil price a major stumbling block in Saudi Aramco sale

1396/4/13 | 01:16
Saudi Arabia’s failure to keep oil production down may severely hamper the sale of shares in Aramco according to industry analysts. Experts believe that only a $60 barrel can save the Aramco IPO, which is significantly higher than the current trading cost of $47.78 a barrel. A combination of failures to reduce oil production and a rise in US shale has kept oil prices at a significantly low level. The Kingdom has placed its hope on the sale of five per cent of its most prized asset, Saudi Aramco. But, Business Insider says that the royal ...

A spokeswoman for the bank said a “third-party supplier” that carries out its foreign exchange service had ceased trading in the currency from 21 June This currency is no longer available for sale or buy-back across our high street banks including Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland and Halifax,” the spokeswoman said. Qatar’s central bank said today it will guarantee ...

Saudi Reshuffle Could Completely Shake Up Oil Markets

1396/4/4 | 01:16
The power restructuring in Saudi Arabia this week led to the elevation of 31-year-old Muhammed bin Salman to crown prince, essentially ensuring that he will become the youngest king of Saudi Arabia in the not-too-distant future.     The heir apparent has already been effectively running the country for the past few years, so the move was not entirely a shock. Nevertheless, the effects on the oil market could be profound.     The new crown prince is known to be a bit unpredictable. In the early phase of the oil ...

IMF applause: Why Pakistan has no reason to rejoice?

1395/8/9 | 01:16
International Monetary Fund’s president, Christine Lagarde, who is recently on a visit to Pakistan, said that the country’s perception on corruption was hurting growth. She was speaking as a keynote speaker at a seminar on “Pakistan and Emerging Markets in the World’s Economy.” She was the first head of IMF to visit Pakistan after the passage of 10 years. She stated that Pakistan’s public debt was high and with corruption being endemic, the country needed a three-pronged strategy to arrest this slide. Previously she ...

IMF praise: Why Pakistan needs to do more?

1395/7/12 | 01:16
International Monetary Fund's Mission Chief to Pakistan Harald Finger has expressed hope that Pakistan's economy will set on a new and sustainable course, breaking from the past cycles of near-crises and aborted stabilisation programmes. "With stronger buffers, improved sentiment, gradually recovering growth, and prospects of more energy supply and an additional impetus from the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), there was hope that Pakistan's economy would set on a new and sustainable course," he wrote in an article published on Friday. ...

Monster of deficit: Pakistan’s slight drift towards bankruptcy

1395/7/7 | 01:16
Pakistan’s current account deficit swelled by more than 90 per cent in the first two months of the current fiscal year, reflecting an increasing pressure on the external front as inflows from all foreign sources are slowing. Falling exports have widened the trade gap, pushing the government to take more steps to save foreign exchange reserves of over $22 billion. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Wednesday reported that the current account deficit rose to $1.316bn during July-August, 92pc higher as compared to $686m a year earlier. Time was ...

Dangerous deficit: Why Pakistan economy can’t be stable?

1395/7/5 | 01:16
Current account deficit widened to $591 million in July 2016, more than double from $234 million in the same month of last fiscal year, the central bank data showed on Friday. The deficit during the first month of the current fiscal year of 2016/17 posted a year-on-year expansion of 152 percent from the corresponding month of 2015/16. The deficit rose by 93pc compared to the same period last year, making it difficult to paper over it by pointing towards remittances and inflows from creditors. There may well be a continued expansion in the ...
