Erdogan: Taste of own Medicine

SHAFAQNA PAKISTAN (Shia News Agency)-Erdo

Turkey’s AKP party suffered a tough night at the hands of the electorate as it lost its overall majority in the parliamentary elections. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu put on a brave face and said the ruling AKP had won — securing 41pc of the votes — but the harsh fact for him is that, for the first time, Mr Erdogan will have to look for a coalition partner. AKP recorded its first fall in support in four elections, which means the new president’s dreams of consolidating power and making his office much more powerful will now never come to fruition. And as is always the case in the more advanced countries, the financial markets are the most credible litmus test of popular sentiment. And the way the Istanbul Stock Exchange took a nosedive and how the lira lost a good five percent against the dollar in a short period of time indicated investors weren’t willing to touch Turkey – usually a safe play – with a 10-foot pole. The credit for this breakthrough goes to HDP leader Selahattin Demirtas, whose campaign strategy went beyond the grievances of the Kurdish minority and appealed to Turkey’s leftist and anti-Erdogan elements. While the HDP leader’s claim that the talk of “executive presidency and dictatorship” has come to an end is true, the implications of Sunday’s polls are likely to have long-term effects on Turkish politics, especially the consequences, not necessarily negative, of the decline in the AKP’s popularity.  Erdogan’s regime has been criticised for mishandling protests, with several protestors dying or getting injured as a result of police brutality. The growing support for the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) was another new factor in these elections. HDP has now expanded its base beyond just the Kurdish population. HDP had an appeal with women voters, gays and secular demographics in these elections, who may have been feeling threatened by the religious tilt of Erdogan’s regime. HDP had the highest proportion of female candidates of any party in the election and the only openly gay candidate. It is perhaps this expansion in the party’s voter demographics that has allowed it to gain enough votes to enter parliament, its 12.5 percent of the vote having transcended the required minimum 10 percent. Also Erdogan has appeared a man increasingly divorced from reality. His personal falling out with Bashar al Assad – previously fast friends – made Turkey partake in a war that has brought it, and the region, only trouble, besides destroying its foreign policy equilibrium. He has become more authoritarian, hammering down on the slightest sign of dissent. And there is increasing hubris in his outlook. Now he wanted absolute majority to amend the constitution and make his office more powerful.  The most appalling indication of his authoritarian streak has been his use of the constitutional clause which prohibits insulting the head of state. No one before him has used this clause.
