United Nations humanitarian coordinator: Famine threatens 95 districts in Yemen

The United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, Jimmy McGoldrick, revealed that 95 districts in Yemen are threatened with famine.

The UN official expressed thanks and appreciation for the efforts and positive contributions made by the concerned agencies, which contributes to the response to the cholera epidemic and to confront the worsening food and health needs in 95 districts threatened by famine, the Yemeni official news agency of Yemenpress reported during a meeting in Sana’a with the head of the Supreme Political Council.

The United Nations, Humanitarian Program in Yemen was surprised by the rapid spread of the epidemic in 21 provinces and the breakdown of the health system and its inability to cope with crises that were outside the plans and estimates of the United Nations.

McGoldrick pointed to the difficulties facing the United Nations in mobilizing resources for the humanitarian response in Yemen and the inability to deliver human suffering through the international media.

He stressed the continued work with partners in the field from the , water and the environment, and building on the great achievements made by the workers, especially in the health and humanitarian sector who are working voluntarily and have not been able to get their salaries and wages for several months, which prompted the United Nations to search for Incentives for field workers and continued introduction of solutions and drugs needed to cope with the cholera epidemic.

He also stressed that the United Nations always raises the issues related to humanitarian aid and the humanitarian needs of airports and salaries in its list of priorities and it is working to achieve a breakthrough in the subject of Sanaa airport and to convey the voice and suffering of the Yemeni people to the world, which is seen through the global media and social media interactions.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Yemen thanked the President of the Political Supreme Council and concerned institutions for their support and facilities for the work of the United Nations in Yemen.
