Shafaqna Special: Why did Saudi king cancelled Maldives visit
The Saudi king has cancelled a scheduled visit to the politically-troubled atoll nation of the Maldives because of an outbreak of swine flu in its capital, the government in Male announced on Friday.
The Maldives was to be the final stop in the monarch’s ongoing Asian tour that has already taken him to Malaysia, Indonesia, China and Japan.Foreign Minister Mohamed Asim said a new date for King Salman’s trip to the Indian Ocean archipelago would be announced later.
Though Swine Flu was held responsible for the failure of this visit but the fact is that visit was postponed due to protests against a proposed $10 billion Saudi investment in the country’s tourism and transport.
Activists are protesting alleged plans by Maldives’ President Abdulla Yameen to sell off a chain of islands and lagoons to the powerful son of King Salman, Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s defense minister and deputy crown prince.
