Coping with the Sehwan tragedy

pakistan-blast-story_647_021617084731-640x400By: Nazia Memon

It is rightly alleged that terrorists or terrorism has no religion but are they really human beings? Do they have a heart? Or do they belong to the Homo sapiens species?

Yester eve I heard people yelling, crying, calling that terrorist a butcher (who was an intruder) who entered the shrine of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalander when hundreds of pilgrims, fakirs and devotees flocked into the premises of the shrine to participate in the “Dhamal” (A Sufi ritual) on Thursday a day of spiritual significance in Pakistan’s shrine culture.

When devotees and pilgrims were busy in communicating and offering tributes to the saint, a suicide bomber blew himself up, and in this blast nearly 80 people were been martyred and more than 150 wounded.

Here I am, discerning about the people who have lost their precious lives. It has torn my heart up to see the ill-fated deaths after the Attack. Among those 80 martyred, there were 20 children with their dreams and wishes. But now those dreams have shattered and are put to rest forever.

I am speculating if there is only death walking in the narrow line of Sehwan near the shrine of Sufi Lal Qalander Shahbaz or is someone still chanting “Jhulelal”?

Pardon me if I’ve slipped off emotionally. But it is just because Sehwan is my native place.

It wasn’t their destiny, those who were killed in the Sehwan attack did not deserve to lose their lives is such a tragic manner to be called martyrs or heroes later. Clearly it is the failure of our government who flops to protect the innocent citizens of Pakistan.

The government’s duty shouldn’t be limited to condemn, condole and give statements and rest till another incident takes place.

Pakistan seems to be undergoing the new vigor of terror attacks. On Thursday, before the Sehwan attack, the army’s convoy in the Awaran area of Balochistan had been targeted.

On Feb 15th, a suicide bomber struck in Mohmand and Tehreek-i-Taliban (TTP) took responsibility of the attack. On the same day a suicide bomber attacked the vehicle carrying judges in Peshawar’s Hayatabad Phase 5 area, that attack too was claimed by the TTP.

On the 23rd of Feb a suicide bomber blew himself up in a protest at Lahore’s Charing Cross. The attack occurred right outside the gates of Punjab’s Provincial Assembly. This attack was claimed by the Jamat-ul-Ahrar.

Most of the incidents of terrorism reported in Pakistan are claimed by terrorist organizations, with their headship hiding in Afghanistan.

After the Sehwan attack ISPR released a statement quoting the army chief saying “Each drop of the nation’s blood shall be revenged and revenged immediately. No more restraint for anyone.”

On Friday evening in its statement, the military’s media wing claimed that it had found connections to militant support networks operating from across the border and terrorist’s hideouts on Pak-Afghan border have been targeted. 100 alleged militants have been killed in intelligence-based operations carried out by security forces across the country, including Punjab.

Most of the people who know the history and cultural value of the city believe that the attack on Sehwan Sharif is a spasm on the culture, history and civilization.

The nation has seen the worst of the worst and has lost a lot, now it’s time to uproot this menace of terrorism, once and for all.
