Shafaqna Special: Saudi barbarism in Yemen and world’s criminal silence

More than 200 people have been killed and over 500 injured in air strikes on a funeral gathering in Yemen’s capital Sanaa, a senior UN official says.Jamie McGoldrick, the UN humanitarian co-ordinator for Yemen, condemned “the horrific attack”. The rebel Houthi-run government said a Saudi-led coalition was responsible – a claim Saudi Arabia denied. The US said it had launched an “immediate review” of its already reduced support for the coalition.  The Saudi military insists it chooses its targets carefully, and that it goes to great lengths to abide by international humanitarian law and the law of armed conflict. But there have been numerous and well-documented reports of civilians being hit, including medical centres run by international aid charities, as well as schools and food processing plants over the past 18 months. The death toll has been one of the largest of any single incident since the Saudi-led alliance began military operations to try to restore President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to power following his ouster by the Houthis last year. The Saudi-led coalition has been providing air support for Hadi’s forces in a civil war that has killed more than 10,000 people since March 2015 and displaced more than three million. The long running recipe of sectarian violence and a bloody power struggle has resulted in absolute chaos in Yemen. At the international level, efforts are needed to make sure that the troubled Yemen does not become an ideal location for global terrorism. The solution lies in avoiding self-centred politics and working for social harmony. All forces and stakeholders should be on board and work for reaching a social compact for progress, prosperity and durable peace in the region. Unity is essential for overcoming the nefarious designs of vested interest elements. In this time of so much human loss, we extend our heartfelt prayers to the people of Yemen, and in particular, the children of Yemen, the innocent victims of any war, notwithstanding the cause. And a request to the western powers — allies of Saudi Arabia — especially the UK and the USA, to work on devising a peaceful solution of the turmoil in Yemen. Wars, evenly or unevenly matched, yield nothing but death and devastation, the results of which are short and long term, affecting generations of a nation.
