End of Rio Journey:  Abysmal state of Pakistan sports

Pakistan’s Olympics dream ended when athlete Najma Parveen exited the competition after failing to qualify for the main round of women’s 200m race on Monday. She finished at the 70th spot out of 72 athletes. Najma was the last ray of hope for the country after all other six athletes from Pakistan’s meager seven-member contingent failed to advance in Rio Olympics. Earlier, Judoka Shah Hussain Shah on whom the nation had pinned hopes for a medal was defeated by Ukrainian Artem Bloshenko in the second round of men’s 100kg Judo event. Minhal Sohail, the first ever Pakistani female shooter to compete in the Olympics, was also eliminated from the games after she finished 28th out of 51 in 10m distance shooting competition. Swimmer Haris Bandey had finished last among 50 participants who took part in the men’s 400m freestyle competitions. Pakistan’s top swimmer Lianna Swan had finished 64th out of 88 swimmers in the 50m freestyle heats last Friday. the adverse impact of the mainstream commercial attention on cricket in the last few decades should also be dealt with. Yes, cricket passion is much pronounced in South Asia, especially during games between Pakistan and India; however, this nationalism that rejuvenates the entire country should also be enjoyed during other sports events. It is not only the administration that needs to reconsider its approach towards sports sector. The societal mindset should also be significantly revolutionised if Pakistan aspires to see its athletes succeed in future. Young athletes should be encouraged to pursue their passions as early as their school years so that they can effectively cultivate their talent. Educational institutes should also invest in developing their potential by provision of required infrastructure as well as necessary personnel. Not only can international collaborations be sought to introduce raw talent to global community, public-private alliances can also help fund such endeavours. The societal hurdles that female athletes face, especially with regard to training in the open, should also be addressed through awareness campaigns and special media broadcasts. Pakistani athletes have previously established their excellence at fields across the world and, if supported, still have the potential to successfully reach the podium. There is also the need to cultivate passion for sports as a profession, as many talented children as soon as they reach mid-teens are made to give up the sport they loved and excelled in during their school years. Not just peer pressure and societal perceptions, even most parents do not attach a great deal of importance to their children’s talent for a particular sport. Pakistan would have outstanding athletes the day sports at a young age are regarded as a true passion and a long-term goal instead of a school-life love and a hobby to tick the box of extracurricular activities. Natural talent only works if it is matched with hard work, dedication, will to succeed and perseverance for excellence. And for the attainment and sustainability of that ecosystem, individual talent needs support: at home, in school, in college, from sports federations, and from government.
