Frustrated and disappointed: Pakistan witness a sharp increase in suicide

Su

Abdul Basit, 27, a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) final year student at the Hamdard University who had set himself on fire on Monday after missing his exam and died at the burns ward of the Civil Hospital Karachi in the wee hours of Tuesday, was buried at the PECHS graveyard. His funeral prayers were offered at the Al-Falah Masjid. He was admitted to the hospital with over 85.5 percent burn wounds. He was first taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, but the doctors there had referred him to the CHK burns ward. The doctors there say Basit might have survived had he been brought to the hospital within half an hour of the incident. Senior medico-legal officer Dr Nisar Shah said Basit had suffered about 86 percent burns injuries. Pakistan. On April 16, there was another episode of alleged suicide by a teenaged girl from Dera Ghazi Khan, who succumbed to her injuries after falling from the seventh floor of a hotel in Lahore. Despite a worldwide increase of 60 percent in tragic yet puzzling suicidal rates, the subject is still largely kept under wraps in Pakistan. Even though a quantitative evaluation of suicide cases is necessary to design effective prevention policies, the painful circumstances that push someone over the edge should also not be overlooked by both lawmakers as well as the bereaved. Data suggests that suicide rate has become more common in Pakistani youth as compared to older people. The carefree years of youth are now only a tale of the past for many young people as they face distress caused by severe academic pressures, peer pressure and unreasonably high parental expectations. These anxieties add to the average teenage woes of identity crisis and relationship problems. The constant need to excel at anything and everything is making a large majority of Pakistani youth fall prey to drug addiction among other vices. Even more disturbing is the lack of communication between parents and these adolescents. Local campaigns to increase awareness about depression and other pressures faced by youth should be immediately sponsored by government bodies. In addition, the state should invest in creating crisis intervention centres and hotlines so that effective counselling may help scores of young people standing on the edge. Although the Aman Telehealth and Agha Khan University Hospital are two of the notable privately-funded ventures already providing 24-hour counselling to people in distress, these projects also require government patronage to reach more people. Cyber bullying is often reported as another major source of distress to youth today. Researchers have found a close association between cyberbullying and suicidal thoughts, an oft-ignored phenomenon in Pakistani society. However, this source of terror to many young people in the country cannot be dealt with changes in framework alone. Suicidal thoughts are not a disease that can be cured with medicine and prevention. Committing suicide is an act that is final and absolute, and the pain remains forever for those who lose their loved ones to a self-inflicted act. What is needed to understand symptoms of suicide tendencies are the gifts of empathy, compassion, and responsiveness to pain of others. While we cannot protect our loved ones from pain, what we can do is be there for them when they hurt. Hold your loved one who is in pain to let him or her know that he or she is not alone, and that no issue is worth losing sleep over, let alone life.
