Is US afraid of North Korea’s nuclear ambitions?

Is US

Taking advantage of a perceived thaw in relations between Tokyo and Seoul, U.S. President Barack Obama met with his counterparts from Japan and South Korea on the fringes of the Nuclear Security Summit to promote greater trilateral unity to address North Korea’s nuclear ambitions. But at their meeting in Washington, the leaders of the three nations came up short on ideas about how to persuade Pyongyang to stop provocative acts like nuclear weapons tests and rocket launches. “The United States has invested quite a bit of time and diplomatic energy,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters in referring to President Barack Obama’s efforts to help his Japanese and South Korean counterparts mend fences. Two years ago Obama brokered a meeting between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Park Geun-hye on the sidelines of the previous round of the nuclear summit in the Netherlands. Improving ties between Tokyo and Seoul is indispensable to the United States as it focuses on challenges related to the rise of China, U.S. officials said. Obama vowed to  to ramp up pressure on North Korea in the context of its recent nuclear missile tests.
The remarks came as North Korea fired a short-range missile into the sea on Friday warning it would continue developing its nuclear weapons. The test is the latest in series of weapon launches by the North in an apparent response to ongoing military exercises between the US and its ally South Korea which the sanctions-hit country views as an invasion rehearsal. Tit for tat responses and provocations from both sides pose a dangerous situation for the peace and stability of Korean peninsula and greater responsibility rests with the US to handle the situation very carefully without going for arms build up on the peninsula as it will only contribute rising the temperature of tension in the region and make it difficult for Korean war separated families to get together for reunion events. As pointed out by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the solution of the crisis lies only and only in dialogue and consultation process. Six party talks that included two Koreas, China, the United States, Japan and Russia had collapsed in 2008 and since then no serious effort has been made to resume the process. Washington should reverse its policy on North Korea like it did in the case of Iran as well as most recently with Cuba in order to take things towards normalcy on the peninsula as pushing this part of the world into any conflict will have disasters consequences. China enjoys influence on the leadership of North Korean leadership and Washington can seek assistance of the good offices of Beijing to bring the North on the table of negotiations. To create the conducive environment, Washington will also have to announce some confidence building measures such as indicating towards lifting of sanctions as the policy of sanctions, no matter how bone numbing are they, do not get sanctioned countries renounce their strategic objectives. We hope better sense will prevail on both sides to safe the peninsula from any misadventure.
