Threat to Cricket team: An untoward incident can trigger war between India Pakistan

Indo pak

The Pakistan cricket team arrived in India on Saturday evening amid tight security to take part in the World Twenty20 championship, ending days of uncertainty over their participation in the tournament. The team first travelled from Lahore to Abu Dhabi and rested there for some time before boarding an Etihad flight for Kolkata. Pakistan will be meeting India in one of the most awaited games of the tournament at the Eden Gardens on March 19. The 27-member squad consists of 15 players and 12 officials. Pakistan’s fears were not unwarranted and its calls on the Indian government to give assurances on adequate security were certainly valid — especially after the Himachal Pradesh chief minister, in effect, stated that his state will not be able to guarantee the national team’s safety. While Pakistanis remained worried — their concerns validated on the back of the actions of angry Indian protestors last year who had forced some Pakistani celebrities out of India — officials on the other side of the border appeared almost nonchalant. Cricket’s popular appeal has often been used by rulers in Pakistan and India to iron out diplomatic tensions. But the current situation astonishingly saw politicians and cricket officials from both sides swept along by the events instead of controlling them. From the beginning, the Indian authorities and the ICC ought to have shown greater determination to create a congenial atmosphere for the teams and tournament. Unfortunately, that did not happen. The question now arises — if all it needed were governmental assurances to make Pakistan’s participation in the mega event possible, why were they given just four days before the national team’s first match? Why the delay? Why did India opt to display a misplaced sense of power when it should have played the role of the welcoming host? Was there something else at play within Indian politics that dragged Pakistani players into the mix? Concerns over security will remain and the players would have to bear the brunt of it. Pakistani fans will avoid going to India not just because of security threats, but also due to the Indian government’s reluctance to grant visas. For a genuine fan, cricket itself could be the casualty here. The inflamed passions of the Himachal Pradesh chief minister and Shiv Sena miscreants notwithstanding, every single seat at the 25,000-capacity stadium at Dharamsala had been sold out a month in advance. Pakistani authorities, concerned for the safety of their players, thankfully presented their terms to both India and the ICC. Their efforts have duly paid off with the contentious game at Dharamsala being shifted to Kolkata, besides the pledging of security assurances by the Indian authorities. The challenges for the Pakistan team in India today are likely to be far greater compared to a decade ago.
