No animal left to eat: Madaya, the hell on the earth

star

The town of Madaya has been cut off from the outside world, including its access to food supplies. By early January, residents had been reduced to eating grass and insects. They had already eaten the city’s stray cats and dogs. At least 23 people died from starvation. Late on Monday, that siege appears to have ended — for the moment — as the first humanitarian assistance trucks, permitted entry under an international agreement to help Madaya, rolled into the city. But it’s still too early to celebrate: Aid trucks had been let into Madaya in October, and the siege was reimposed afterward. But more fundamentally, no agreement can really prevent this kind of starvation from happening again, either in Madaya or in another Syrian city, because this is not a phenomenon specific to this one town but applies widely across the war. The only way to make sure this never happens again is for Syria’s war to end. Food is being used as a weapon of war in Syria. Starvation and fear loom large as the Syrians struggle to make their ends meet. The regime in Damascus is no more than ceremonial in essence, and the country is polarised on the lines of swatches of territories that the anti-government rebels, the Daesh, the Kurds and other militias control at their own whims and wishes. It is horrifying. The ground situation, as far as shortage of food supplies are concerned, was brought to the fore as the United Nations struggled for weeks and months to gain access to the southern besieged town of Madaya, bordering Lebanon. For more than six months, the entire region is cut off from other areas due to a government blockade, and hundreds and thousands of people are starving to death. The area is under the control of rebels, and Damascus with the help of its proxy, the Hezbollah, is playing a game of carrot and stick. It is owing to the efforts of the world body\’s aid agencies and the Medecins Sans Frontieres efforts that deliveries of medicines and other essential supplies are being sent in that difficult and lawless terrain. After weeks of negotiations with the stakeholders in the besieged areas, an aid convoy carrying supplies for around 40,000 people for a month is now on its way to Madaya. The warring factions in Syria, as well as the regime, should revisit the international consensus that was attained last year through which it was decided that aid convoys would not be obstructed, and supplies of essential items will be ensured in the war zones. The dispute in Syria is in need of a political solution for the sake of humanity.
