Rana Sanaullah’s assertion: Is state bluffing people about ISIS presence?

About 100 Pakistanis, including women, have travelled to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic State since the rise of the dreaded terror group in the Middle East, a minister in the provincial Punjab government said in a statement. “Some 100 Pakistanis including women have left the country for Syria and Iraq to join the ISIS since the rise of the militant group in the Middle East,” Punjab province Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said. “The government is doing its best to stop the recruitment for the ISIS,” the minister said, adding that eight activists of the group were arrested from Sialkot district of Punjab and they are still associated with the Jamaat-ud-Dawah. He said the government would not let the ISIS to have their foothold in Pakistan. The Provincial Minister’s statement has come nearly a week after the counter terrorism department claimed busting an ISIS terror cell in Sialkot. The arrests clearly signal towards the presence of many more ISIS militants, supporters and abettors in the country. The outfit, which burst on to the international scene in 2014 when it seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, has been seeping into different regions of the world since inception. Many of the outfit’s facilitators and abettors have been identified in various states of our neighbouring India and at the same time it is attracting sympathizers from different European countries. A group of women was recently exposed in the UK as the ISIS sympathizer promoting extremist ideology and encouraging impassionate young girls to travel to Syria to join the ranks of the outfit. The ISIS therefore, without any iota of doubt, has turned into a worldwide phenomenon and requires a collective approach to counter it. Since, it is not the matter of any one country but the entire world and that no country can deal with it in isolation, we, therefore, propose that the United Nations should hold a high profile conference to discuss ways and means to fight the threat posed by the terror outfit. The conference should chalk out both short and long term strategies envisaging concrete solutions to stop and crush the further advancements of the ISIS. The implementation of these strategies should be made incumbent upon countries as without their collaborative, serious and sincere effort, it will be next to impossible, to defeat this monster.
